When Manuel Martinez-Cruz graduates from Santa Rosa High School later this month, he will be the third of three students to graduate from high school since the inception of Center's year-round Mariachi program in 2017. While the LBC’s Mariachi program necessarily focuses on music and culture, supporting students' education is a key objective. In fact, it is a requirement that students maintain a B average or above to remain active with mariachi.

When it comes dedication and commitment, Manuel exceeds expectations, and it comes as no surprise to hear that he had his choice of several universities. In the fall, Manuel will attend UC Davis where he will pursue a degree in electrical engineering. We were pleased to learn that while at Davis he will also continue with the violin since he has become an accomplished violinist.

"We are going to miss seeing Manuel at mariachi classes," says director of the Mariachi Ensemble, José Soto. "But we know he is going to do great, and we are very proud of him." Soto adds, "Manuel is always welcome back to talk to the kids, inspire them, and, if he has the time, teach them a violin lesson."

When asked what advice he'd give younger students, Manuel shared, "Sure, there are ups and downs, but you get through them. Keep your head up, keep marching forward and don't give up. You will do it."

Congratulations, Manuel! Keep up the good work!

That’s a wrap! Our last professional development of the 2020-21 school year was held last week. Each of the 11 PD offerings were virtual allowing us to serve 165 educators including district administrators, classroom teachers, and teaching artists from nine counties, three states, and two countries.  All that work amounts to over 5,445 hours of professional development this year.  That’s pretty productive given the pandemic!

One highlight of this work was our incredible partnership with Santa Rosa City Schools allowing us to provide three workshops to meet specific needs from within the district.  Kudos to SRCS for thinking creatively during an outside-the-box school year.

Looking ahead, we are busily working on professional development offerings for the 2021-22 school year.  We can’t wait to reveal it to you later this spring!

We're winding down our final few Artists in the Schools residencies and classes this month. Despite the many format changes educators, students, and teaching artists had to wrap their heads around, we were able to serve 1,300+ students this year in 14 different schools throughout Sonoma and Marin. Teaching both virtually and (eventually!) in person, we danced to Latin hip-hop, recorded audio dramas, played the ukulele, created bird masks, practiced the art of African drumming, dance, wrote plays about bullying, and so much more!

While we're all hoping for a more traditional classroom setup for Artists in the Schools in the new school year, we've learned that our teachers and teaching artists are more than capable of tackling any challenge that comes their way. Here’s to many more years of student creativity and arts education partnerships!
