February 2021
Your LBC offers world-class arts-integrated curriculum for PK through 12 grades. Our Artists in the Schools program (AIS) brings artists directly into your classroom—whether in-person or virtual! As part of the AIS program, our Arts Integration Residencies program was developed in-line with the Kennedy Center for the Arts vision of arts-integrated learning. Each lesson is aligned with Common Core standards, with six total sessions! We pair a professional teaching artist with your class to facilitate a deeper dive into the academic content area of your choice. You don't have to choose between art and other core content—if you want art and math, you can do both! Study after study shows that the arts increase retention and create more successful students.

In January, every seventh grade English class at Davidson Middle School in San Rafael participated LBC’s Artist in Residency program. Students wrote adaptations of books they'd been reading in class, The Hunger Games and The Outsiders. Virtual learning gave students the opportunity to take advantage of technology to create incredible audio dramas!
Students devised scripts, cast themselves, rehearsed lines, and recorded their parts individually. For many students, the biggest challenge was playing multiple roles relying solely on their voice! Students created a unique voice for each character so the audience could tell them apart even with no visual cues—a challenge even for seasoned actors! Students’ lines were edited together with sound effects and music to turn each script into an abridged audio version of the stories.

Students learned about drama, script writing, and solidified their knowledge of literature using LBC’s amazing techniques!

Adapting literature for the stage is a simple and powerful way to engage middle and high schoolers with the text. This workshop introduces techniques to help your students script and stage whatever you’re reading together in your classroom, whether in-person or virtually! While the text utilized is geared towards middle and high school students, this strategy is also effective with texts for younger readers.
