Five ways to engage with Versa-Style Dance Company at LBC

While LBC brings hundreds of performances to our community every year, occasionally we get to do something extra special. Sometimes, the opportunity presents itself for us to also offer a School Show for grade school students, or a Master Class to allow for direct interaction and training from those artists, or even a Community Dialogue that sparks meaningful conversation on timely issues and topics. This is just one of the ways we strive to fulfill our mission to bring outstanding presentations to every corner of our community. That being said, it’s a tall order to ask all of those things from an artist. It’s never been done!

Until now. This November, LBC is proud to present Versa-Style Dance Company, part of the Rodney Strong Dance Series. Versa-Style uses street dance vernacular as a vehicle of expression. Their work dives into the concept of freedom from all angles, exploring questions from an evolutionary and ancestral lens, and how art is infused in the fabric of who we are. In addition to a public performance, Versa-Style will perform a School Show performance for middle and high school students, a Master Class , AND a Community Dialogue with a special focus on young people and educators. In addition, LBC is offering a special Teacher’s Night Out through our TEAM program, with a limited number of free tickets to the public performance for local educators!

Through the five different opportunities to engage, Versa-Style Dance Company has helped Your LBC provide something for everyone!

Teachers Experiencing Arts Meet-Up (TEAM) serves as a teacher’s night out, while also introducing educators to aspects of the Center’s programming they may not have experienced. It also gives teachers the chance to help us shape our programs to better serve them and their students. Each event revolves around an arts activity tied to one of our Education and Community Engagement program.

Versa-Style Dance

Los Angeles-based hip-hop dance sensation, Versa-Style, breaks through color lines by bringing diverse people together. Versa-Style strives to share the impact arts can have with students in their own communities. This special performance for students showcases the history of hip-hop culture, demonstrating freedom of expression and individuality, hard work, self-discipline, and dedication.

This enthusiastic multi-media program introduces students to the rich history of jazz and to the names, faces, and music of some of its many masters such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Dizzy Gillespie. Your students will love when the jazz greats come to life before their eyes as cartoon characters on an energetic talk show, with a live band on stage to play their greatest tunes! The fun, highly engaging presentation also features a charismatic host.

Celebrating the Great American Blues Tradition

Instill a greater appreciation, awareness, and understanding of the rich history of the blues in your students with this interactive program. Yes Indeed! demonstrates the blues’ roots in work songs, spirituals, hymns, field hollers, and chants of 19th century southern U.S. The distinct sound emerged as a creative expression for persisting through hardship and prevailing over adversity. In discovering this uniquely American musical style, students will identify the blues as the inspiration for R&B, funk, gospel, rock, and hip hop.

 
 
 

ARTS INTEGRATION RESIDENCY
Ecosystem in a Box
Instructor: Bridget Palmer
Grades: 3-5
Subjects: Drama, Science

This imaginative, immersive residency uses theater techniques to invite students into a personal exploration of organisms, ecosystems, and the vital role human impacts on natural resources play in the balance of nature. Working in small groups, students will use research skills, imagination, and oral speaking skills to present a short performance in which they embody the animals in the eco-system that they are studying. Then they’ll share their discoveries with their classmates. Classroom teachers are invited to suggest specific units to explore through this fun and memorable residency. Artist will provide simple costume elements.

Combining Arts Education with Social Emotional Learning Techniques

Explore the techniques in combining artistic expression with Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in a classroom setting. The workshop will begin with a trauma-informed SEL-based demo lesson, combining art, the five senses, and SEL techniques. The end of the session will allow time for feedback, best practices for implementing techniques, and questions.

Designed for teaching artists new to working in school settings or just new to the craft, this session will cover the key elements of a strong lesson, how to build a curriculum plan, working with a classroom teacher, and tailoring your work to a teacher’s expectations. Bring a short lesson as practice material and plan to leave with a flexible template for classroom teaching.

Defining ableism: Disabilities take many forms, including visible and invisible ones. The same can be said about discrimination against individuals with disabilities. In this session, we will start the conversation about ableism from the perspective of disabled people. We will learn from the personal journeys of parents and educators confronting their own ableism. Through these conversations, participants will come away with tools to recognize and challenge ableism within their entire school community.
