Mariachi graduates become camp staff to inspire the next generation

There are various ways to measure the success of an educational after school program. We can look to attendance, grades, and performances, among other things, to assess whether or not a program is “successful.”  For our Mariachi program, which includes multi-week summer camps and robust year-round classes, we take all these factors into consideration.

This year, we have a new metric to measure: how many of our students pursue mariachi training and continue with our program after graduation not as students, but as teachers themselves. Not only do they bring their personal experiences of camps, classes, and learning an instrument, they bring a high level of expertise in the art form of mariachi and its rich culture.

When one of our new students-turned-instructors was asked his favorite part of teaching after being a student of mariachi for several years, Anthony Lopez shared, "I enjoy being able to teach the next generation about mariachi." This evolving cycle ensures the long-term sustainability of the program as student teachers give back while being compensated for their expertise.

We applaud the eight 2022 high school graduates of our program who are now serving nearly 200 aspiring mariachi campers  as staff this summer.  That can definitely be defined as success!
