Upcoming Event

Teaching Artist Training Course – Just $30!

With more than $9 million going to Sonoma County schools every year from Prop 28 for more arts education, the need for a workforce of arts educators is greater than ever!  Prop 28 will provide support for arts programs, so that students have the opportunity to learn arts disciplines that are required by our state education code—visual art, music, theater, dance—in grades 1-12. Schools are required to use the funding to address current gaps in their arts education programs.

Luther Burbank Center for the Arts is offering a Teaching Artist Training Course, a 4-part series with a mix of self-paced online course work and live class sessions that will cover:

  • Designing Residencies for Students

  • Designing Lessons for Classroom Instruction

  • Classroom Management

Instruction will be provided by Focus 5, Inc. The first session is September 27, so sign up today for only $30!

To support next steps after the Teaching Artist Training Course, Creative Sonoma is supporting a paid Teaching Artist Practicum eligible to those teaching artists who complete the LBC Course. The Practicum pairs participants with LBC’s expert teaching artists for a hands-on, in-school experience. Participants will shadow LBC teaching artists through a residency process, receive mentorship and guidance from LBC staff, and ultimately be given the opportunity to take the role of lead teaching artist in a structured classroom environment. Funding for the Practicum provided by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

4:00 – 5:30 pm

Instructor: Dr. Ryan Hourigan

LBC Education Studio

Registration $10

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an instructional framework that provides students with multiple means of engagement, representation, and action and expression within the context of their own constructed meaning of the content. The UDL framework was inspired by research into the brain and how the networks of the brain work together to help a student learn. The three networks in question are the Affective Networks (why?), the Recognition Networks (what?); and the Strategic Networks (how?). Each person’s brain is constructed differently. Therefore, each brain utilizes these networks differently. This workshop will show how the arts, combined with UDL, can make a classroom more inclusive for all styles of learning and for students who bring different experiences and backgrounds to the classroom and how the arts can be used to enhance this framework.
