February 2023

Meet the Teaching Artist: Angelica Blancas Mims

We’re thrilled to introduce one of our visual arts teaching artists, Angelica Blanca-Mims! Like many of our TAs, Angelica has loved art since she was a child, but she started getting serious about it in high school. She loves all kinds of visual art; her favorite is printmaking, which she fell in love with after taking a on this medium in college. Art brings her a sense of calm and relief, and she loves getting to share that passion with students and hope to bring them some joy throughout their day! When she's not teaching with LBC, she's doing art elsewhere—at CHOPS Teen Club, the Charles Schultz Museum, or as part of the Youth Arts Leaders (YAL) Cohort. Way to go, Angelica!

Master Classes & Student Clinics

Imagine learning from the very artists we see on stage. That’s just what we at LBC strive for with our Master Classes and Student Clinics—to provide students of all ages with unique, direct interactions with professional, world-renowned master artists representing a variety of artistic mediums. We seek to make these opportunities available to a wide range of participants, but please note that Master Classes or Student Clinics may not be open to the public.

This season, we’ve already worked with Versa-Style Dance Company for a master class and Calizanza Dance Company for a student clinic.  Later this month, we’ll welcome back JazzReach to our stage and for a student clinic with local high school band students.

If you'd like information about student clinics or master classes, please contact Tracy Sawyer She would love to connect with you!

Finding Wisdom through African Drumming

Instructor: Onye Onyemaechi

Grades: 6-12

Subjects: Music, Social Studies, Social Emotional Learning

In this residency, students will adapt a novel they’ve read in class into an abridged stage version. It’s all in their hands—they will choose the scenes, write the scripts, cast themselves, and create their own stage movement. Along the way, they’ll learn stage essentials, like projection and “cheating out” (to readjust the body with the audience in mind). Additional elements, such as costume design and stage combat may be included, based on the book.
