Congratulations to Sonoma County’s Arts Educator of the Year, Jolene Johnson!
|
The LBC and Creative Sonoma together presented the first Arts Educator of the Year award to Jolene Johnson on March 27 at an Arts Education Alliance event and also honored her at Sonoma County Office of Education’s “A Festive Thought” Art Open House on April 4. In addition to the award, received $500 honoraria and a $500 gift card to a local arts store of her choice for classroom supplies.
A resident of Santa Rosa for 40 years and an educator in Sonoma County since 2009, Jolene is a dance teacher at Analy High School in West Sonoma County and at Santa Rosa Junior College.

She also teaches dance at the Movement Lab in Santa Rosa and has taught at the elementary school level in the county.
“I’m honored to be recognized for sharing my passion with the community and excited to continue inspiring others,” said Jolene. “Often, in the arts, we’re always looking for positive ways to help kids get through their day, find their passion, and have confidence in themselves. Teaching dance allows me to stay connected with the community and create opportunities in the arts for the students of West Sonoma County.”
Sponsored by Daniels Chapel of the Roses, the award honors professional arts educators working with the K-12 population—in particular, arts and classroom instructors who teach visual art, music, drama, dance, or multimedia arts. It recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of arts education over an extended period.
Congratulations, Jolene!

Featuring LBC’s Mariachi Los Toritos and the Mariachi Chilaquiles, Elsie Allen High School drumline and jazz band, and Mark West District choir, band, guitar, and strings students. Dancers from LBC’s first ballet folklórico class this year also will perform.
LBC’s Music for Schools [ital] instrument lending library maintains and houses more than 1,200 musical instruments, most of them donated from community members throughout the North Bay and Bay Area. LBC works with local schools in Sonoma, Marin, and Napa counties to loan the instruments for the school year and at no cost to students who do not have access to their own.
“It’s an honor to extend the life and usefulness of someone’s much beloved and gently used instrument, especially in the hands of a child who wouldn’t learn music without it,” said Tracy Sawyer, who oversees the lending library. “We are equally honored when the community supports the students’ efforts to make the most of that opportunity and to work hard on developing new skills. Music Appreciation Day gives them that chance.”

Monday, May 6, 2024
9:30 am & 11:30 am
Grades K-5
A beautiful wintery tale adapted from Aesop’s classic fable. Throughout the long winter, Silas sits high on a mountain, reluctantly watching over his family’s flock of sheep. His mum and grandad count on him, but he’s bored, while below, his village is full of happy knitters, clicking their needles and crafting projects for the annual knitting competition. To shake things up, Silas cries “wolf” to make the villagers come running, but what happens when they discover his trick? A gifted ensemble of actor-musicians sing and dance to bring all the delightful characters to life, including hilarious sheep and perhaps a scary wolf or two!
