Your lucky charm for arts education!

LBC’s Mariachi supports the community, performing at Noche de Estrellas!

Mariachi Cantares de mi Tierra was asked to perform for SPACE’s Noche de Estrellas in Ukiah on March 16. SPACE—Near & Arnold’s School of Performing Arts & Cultural Education—is an afterschool arts program that serves the youth and community in the Ukiah Area. SPACE’s mission is to empower our youth to discover and trust in their innate ability to be creative, responsible, and compassionate individuals through effective training in dance, theater, music, and cultural education. This is a great opportunity for the LBC to connect and collaborate with other Arts organizations In the North Bay. SPACE hosts their annual Noche de Estrellas, which celebrates Latino culture through performances, food, and art. This is the first year with Mariachi being the main feature and our ensemble has the honor of headlining. LBC’s Mariachi Cantares de mi Tierra will be joined with a few singers from the community, giving them an opportunity to sing with our Mariachi and give our students the experience to play with different singers.

What’s the big IDEA (in the Classroom)?!

What pops into your mind when you see the word IDEA? When it comes to our professional development work, it has dual meanings. What to some is “great thought, let’s go,” at LBC we also think of our goal for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access for all children in and out of the classroom. To help us achieve this in our work at the Center and in the community, we offer a series of workshops throughout the year with IDEA in the Classroom. From “Universal Design for Learning” in the fall to “Brushes for Change: Art as a Path to Cultural Understanding” in February, all workshops are focused on specific, practical application.

The last IDEA workshop of the year is coming up soon! “Understanding Neurodiversity: Building Compassion and Understanding” for all learners will close the series on April 17. Workshop participants will dive into what neurodiversity is (and isn’t) and experience what life is like for many neurodivergent students through simulated activities.

York Theatre Royal of England

Monday, May 6, 2024

9:30 am & 11:30 am

Grades K-5

A beautiful wintery tale adapted from Aesop’s classic fable. Throughout the long winter, Silas sits high on a mountain, reluctantly watching over his family’s flock of sheep. His mum and grandad count on him, but he’s bored, while below, his village is full of happy knitters, clicking their needles and crafting projects for the annual knitting competition. To shake things up, Silas cries “wolf” to make the villagers come running, but what happens when they discover his trick? A gifted ensemble of actor-musicians sing and dance to bring all the delightful characters to life, including hilarious sheep and perhaps a scary wolf or two!

TEACHING ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Ellen Vieira

Ellen is a fabulous and funny teaching artist who joined LBC in 2022. Ellen’s drama programs are full of her signature playfulness and the joy that comes from children finding new ways to express themselves. Ellen teaches “Play Production” and “Mime and Melodrama” residencies, and in a given week may be on all fours acting like animals with kindergarteners, guiding third graders to create plays from their imagined stories, and running voice exercises so a sixth-grade class can record audio dramas. In addition to her Artists in the Schools residencies, Ellen also leads weekly drama programs with children at Catholic Charities’ Caritas Village in Santa Rosa as part of our CARE program.
